In an effort to combat crime, law enforcement officials are keeping a close eye on the Cape Town metro via hundreds of cameras in hotspots across the city, including Gugulethu - an area which has one of the highest murder rates in the Western Cape.
Addressing members of the Gugulethu community during a national police ministry crime prevention imbizo, Western Cape Community Safety and Police Oversight MEC Reagen Allen said 279 of the 300 CCTV cameras were already functional.
"Currently, 93% of the cameras [are] functional, because we are wanting to ensure that where technology can be used, it must be used, in our priority areas as well," he said.
