As reported by the Siya crew, Johannes, 23, is a target for both clubs to join them next season and it was the Buccaneers who initially expressed a desire to land his signature, their rivals Downs were watching closely.
The player’s camp has denied any links with the Soweto giants, but the Siya crew understands that Downs have now entered the fray and have expressed an interest in the South Africa youth international.
The reigning DStv Premiership side aren’t desperate for a right back, but indications are that the club, as they did with Zuko Mdunyelwa, want to bring in another prospect with big potential to be an understudy to some of their senior defenders like Khuliso Mudau.
Johannes’ versatility is also a key area identified by Downs as he could double up as a ball-playing centre-back too.
Pirates for their part have been open with their struggle to find a consistent right back, with their latest signing Thabiso Lebitso having suffered an injury, leaving Thabiso Monyane to fill the void, while Bandile Shandu recovers.
History has shown that more often than not Sundowns get their man, particularly when dealing with SuperSport, though Pirates have also shown that they can have a trick up their sleeves like they did when they prized Patrick Maswanganyi away from the Tshwane outfit.
It now remains to be seen which of the two clubs manage to win the race for Johannes’ signature.
Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment but the club had not responded by the time this story was published.
