A former Al Ahly player has criticised the club's head coach Marcel Koller for starting Percy Tau in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final.

A former Al Ahly star has highlighted what he believes to be a Percy Tau mistake that was made in the first leg of the CAF Champions League final.

The Red Devils were away against Esperance Sportive de Tunis for the first leg on Saturday, but were unable to come out of the tie on Saturday night with a clear advantage after it ended in a 0-0 stalemate.

Former Ahly star Amr Anwar has since stated where he feels the side went wrong as they prepare to host their Tunisian rivals in the second leg at the Cairo International Stadium this Saturday.

Following the first leg, the ex-midfielder assessed Al Ahly's performance and criticised head coach Marcel Koller and South African attacker Tau.

According to Al-Ahram, Anwar stated on Egyptian TV programme Match that the Swiss tactician waited too long to make his substitutions, and that he made a mistake in starting the former Mamelodi Sundowns star for the crunch tie.

He expressed his belief that Tau did not perform well "due to extreme slowness", and that the 11-time CAFCL winners' manager should have brought substitute duo Reda Slim and Mohamed Magdy on much earlier in the game.

He went on to state that Koller "is not greedy" enough when it comes to his desire to win.

Anwar also added that there was no standout performer for both sides, however, and that the encounter did not offer much clear-cut opportunities.

"The match did not witness any serious chances, except for Esperance’s first chance, and the rest were more attempts than opportunities," the 55-year-old said.

"The Al Ahly and Esperance match did not witness the appearance of a spearhead in either team."
