Mamelodi Sundowns’ record breaking DStv Premiership campaign is having effects that are being felt by their biggest local rivals Kaizer Chiefs.

Chiefs will feel belittled by that they are now set to finish with less than half the points that Sundowns have gathered this season.

The Brazilians have shot up to an incredible 72 points on their way to their seventh consecutive league title and could still reach a maximum of 78 if they win the remaining games against TS Galaxy and Cape Town City.

Reaching 78 will mean they only dropped 12 points from the six draws that they have played.

Of note is the fact that with 72 in the pocket, Sundowns how have double the points that Chiefs have at present at 36, which has never happened before between the two clubs in the PSL era years.

Even in the 2003/04 when Chiefs were champions and Sundowns in the bottom half, the gap was not double.

Amakhosi finished with 63 points in that campaign while the Chloorkop-based men had 36 and were down in 10th position.

Then in the 2006/07 season with Sundowns as champions on 61 points and Chiefs in ninth place (42 points), the difference wasn’t double again.

The gap wasn’t so huge again in the 2012/13 season with Chiefs as champions (57 points) and Downs on 39 points in ninth position.

In the 2020/21 season, it wasn’t as severe as this season despite a 31 points difference with Sundowns ending on 67 points while Chiefs had 36.

The 36 points difference could widen to over 40 further if Sundowns win their two remaining games and Chiefs don’t take all three points at Cape Town Spurs on Saturday.

Just to further demonstrate the contrast, the Brazilians have now finished ahead of Chiefs for nine seasons in a row and have been champions for eight of those years.

Even if only Sundowns’ away games were factored in, they would still be ahead of Chiefs this season by virtue of a better goal difference.

Since the last time that Chiefs finished above Sundowns in the 2014/15 season when they were champions with a 12-point lead over the Brazilians, the common denominator has been a catalogue of mishaps for the gold and black masses.
