Issues with sleeping

Dear Dr Bentley Please help. At different points especially when I am anxious, I cannot fall asleep and lie awake---wide awake into the early hours of the morning. Iv tried reading, watching tv, no stimulants, and iv been on prescribed sleeping tablets on and off over the last few years. Recently I had surgery and slept like a baby for three weeks after that. WOW. Over last week, I find myself, unable to sleep and yes I have been undergoing terrible emotional strain. I have been taking mild antihistamines which dont do much.I have been on dopaqhuil prior to my surgery and do not want to go back there although it helped cos I am terrified of becoming addicted. I have a really responsible job and have to be very alert and functioning optimally. I am an exercise fanatic but nothing at moment due to surgery. YOUR EXPERTISE WOULD BE WELCOMED.

Apologies for the delay but my emails were diverted without my knowledge. Not being able to sleep during a period of anxiety is quite normal. During this time treatment with either an anti-anxiety medication or a hypnotic for a snort period is appropriate. If you only take a tablet for a 10 day period only you are unlikely to get addicted to them. During the period when you are not anxious don't take medication. It is also important to recognise how much sleep you really need - it may be less than you think especially during periods of anxiety, So go to bed a little later but still wake up early. This process will improve your sleep.
