Eucalyptus oil for ears

I was prescribed an antibiotic, but I know that many ear infections are misdiagnosed and do not need antibiotics so I'm afraid I'll do more damage than good.  I read on http://ohealthyeah.com/ear-infection-earache/ that eucalyptus oil can help, but I'm not sure if I should try it. I might cause more pain for myself. So, does anyone have any experience with it? WHat would you do? Do you have some other idea? Any advice is welcome!

Hi Maria

The risk of using any oils in your ears includes whether you have a perforation of your ear drum or not.  If there is even the slightest hole, placing oil inside there will seep through into your middle ear, causing more damage.

Yes, you are correct in that many antibiotics will not resolve the middle ear infection, as they usually should resolve on their own within 3 months.  But if this has gone on for longer than that, it can cause a "glue ear" which is then more difficult to drain, and may require a grommet to help the drainage.

If you were prescribed antibiotics from your GP, I would recommend consulting with an ENT to see whether this is the preferred method of treatment.
