Vocal Cords

My son started his own band. Like to know how he can protect his vocal cords and what "medicine" he can drink if he feels his cords are a bit soar?
Thank you!

Dear Susan
Vocal cords are muscles and the only save protection is to use them correctly - taking medication would not protect the vocal cords against abuse .
You have to warm up before singing: http://www.army.mil/fieldband/pages/education/joyofsinging/jos5.html
Drink warm fluids before singing - it relaxes the muscles of the throat
Don't sing higher or lower than your register
Try to avoid things like screaming, or talking loud above machinery noise
Do not press your voice if the throat is already sore or you are hoarse
