Our expert says:
Repurposing is a great idea - keeps stuff out of landfills and gives appealing containers a second life. Metal containers are often fine, and the potential risks low, but the golden rule is, as with any container for growing food, you must know where it came from, what it was used for before, and what it's made of. If you aren't sure, rather use a container you have doubts about for non-edible plants, or in fact - not at all. You can also use metal containers as outer 'sleeves', with a terracotta or plastic pot inside actually holding the plant. Metal can often heat up and damage the roots.
