How come dieticians still promote the disproved idea of "saturated fat is bad"

The idea that a high fat diet, high cholesterol and saturated fat causes heart disease has been thoroughly discredited, yet dieticians still trumpet these outdated ideas. In fact, the low fat high carbohydrate diet has caused diabetes, since in products fat was substituted by sugar.

Thank you for writing to the dietitians.

As healthcare professionals, we practice evidence-based nutrition and base all our advice to patients and clients in a manner that is scientifically supported. Nutrition is a far more complex science than what is believed and research on topics like saturated fat are on-going. For every publication "for" saturated fat, there are double the amount of research papers published "against" saturated fat for inclusion in the diet. To say that the theory of saturated fat has been discredited is too simplistic with many strong, large and new studies to the contrary.
