Following their victory over Royal AM over the weekend, Mamelodi Sundowns are closer to three new records.

The DStv Premiership champions edged Royal AM 1-0 in Tshwane on Saturday evening, thanks to a goal from Peter Shalulile. The Premiership title may have been wrapped up by the club, but there is still a lot for the club to play for in terms of breaking records.

The record yet to be set by anyone in the history of the PSL is going an entire season without a defeat and the Tshwane giants are just four matches away from becoming the South African 'Invincibles'.

While head coach Rulani Mokwena has stayed away from talking too much about going an entire season unbeaten, it would no doubt go down as one of the most incredible achievements which will put him ahead of greats such as Ted Dumitru, Gordon Igesund and Gavin Hunt.

Sundowns are also in a good position to beat the 71 points record they previously set with former coach Pitso Mosimane in 2015/16. They were ruthless that season under the tutelage of Mosimane and now have an opportunity to accumulate more points this term.

They need to collect six points in their last four matches to beat that record and will no doubt believe that this is possible, considering how well they have done to get results so far, even on days when they were not at their best.

When Sundowns set the record of 71 points in a season, they registered 22 victories. Those are the most points collected by a team  since the 30-game season first came about in the PSL in 2002/03 (previously 34 matches were played in a season in the PSL).

They have 20 victories this season, meaning they would need to win three of their last four matches to beat a record they set themselves.
