The story
"Bhele" and his foundation have launched the second edition of the Siyabonga Nomvethe Schools Cup at the Moses Mabhida Stadium this week, reaffirming his goal to give children a platform to shine in more than one sporting code.
Nomvethe is one of the finest sporting figures Durban has ever produced, as he enjoyed a long and successful professional football career that saw him play locally as well as countries like; Sweden, Denmark and Italy.
The PSL's all-time leading goal scorer is passionate about giving back to his home province of KZN, and with this school's cup was started to get children of the street and invest their energy and time into sport.
The first edition of the tournament saw schools from areas in Durban such as; Inanda, KwaMashu and Ntuzuma, with the second year seeing the Siyabonga Bhele Nomvethe Foundation and its governmental partners taking it to the rest of the province.
Hailing from KwaMashu, north of Durban, Bhele, says his foundation aims to achieve his goal of bringing back the schools’ tournaments, so children with potential in the rural areas can have the opportunity to realise their dreams of being football and netball stars.
"In launching this tournament, the aim is to encourage the whole of KZN to take part. I think it is very important for children to get opportunities to play, especially children from rural areas because they don't get as many opportunities to play a sport.
"The tournament starts at under-13 level for boys in soccer and girls in netball up to under-19's [for both sporting codes]. It will be good for these children to get an opportunity to play and also get a platform to showcase their talents," said Bhele in isiZulu.
It's not been made clear as to when this year's Siyabonga Nomvethe Schools Cup will take place.
