The story

It's been an inconsistent season for target man Ranga Chivaviro since he made the switch from Marumo Gallants to Kaizer Chiefs before the start of the 2023/24 campaign.

Chivaviro has managed only four goals in 21 appearances for the Glamour Boys so far and will be desperate to the goal scoring standard he set at his previous club.

The 31-year-old took to his Instagram story to share his all-time favourite meal and it's likely to surprise a number of people, especially if you're not from Limpopo.

Chivaviro shared a snap of his dream plate, a portion of pap and Makeke (edible termites), a popular delicacy in the Limpopo province.

A 2018 study conducted by researchers from the University of Witwatersrand shows that edible termites, which are rich in proteins, fats, vitamins and many essential mineral nutrients, are a vital food and income source for many underprivileged South African families.

The significant findings of the study revealed:

  • Termites are sources of food with high economic and social importance, and are easily accessible by the poor.
  • Studies have been conducted on edible termites in many African countries, yet comparatively little is known about edible termites in South Africa.
  • Preservation of indigenous knowledge used during harvesting and processing needs to be prioritised.

What might be seen as a meal that belongs on Fear Factor, for many South Africans, especially communities that reside in the Limpopo province, Makeke and pap keeps belly's full without burning a hole ones pocket.

An article shared by News24 in 2018 about this study also revealed that; "More than three-quarters of respondents prefer to eat their termites fried. Others eat them fresh from the termite mound, or dried and then cooked with maize meal porridge and a tomato and onion sauce. Dried termites can also be eaten as a snack."

Here's a look at Chivaviro's plate, which he likely hopes will fuel him to finish the season on a high and help Amakhosi beat Polokwane City this weekend.
