A massive 220 hectares of veld were destroyed in the Skeleton Gorge fire in Table Mountain National Park (TMNP) that started over the weekend, according to South African National Parks (SANParks).
Several fires started on Saturday during a lightning storm in Cape Town and by Sunday, the area above Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden was also alight.
On Wednesday morning, SANParks said light rain in the morning helped to contain the fire that spread to the Back Table, but that isolated hotspots, as well as falling trees and rockfalls, were still a concern.
