Q.

Leaky ear and congested nose

Hi doctor I have a 2 year old that has had a leaky ear with yellow mucus coming out of it. He also has a very congested nose eith yellow mucus. He had this leaky ear 2 weeks ago with no fever and his ENT doctor gave him an antibiotic which took it away. He had grommets put in in July month this year so I'm sure the grommets are doing a good job by draining all the mucus but this leaky ear is back and he has a fever as well now. I contacted his ENT doctor yesterday an he recommended that we use Alleged syrup long term for him but the fever is now worrying me. Should I rather take him to the hospital or what should I do? His congested nose is an ongoing problem since he was a baby and so far nothing has helped. His speech also sounds like a child with a very blocked nose but he speaks well. Please help. His ENT isn't helping much

I am also worried about your son and agree with your concerns. His leaky ear is either due to infected mucus coming from his grommet or from a perforation of his eardrum. Either way there is no doubt that he has an infection in his ear. giving an old fashioned sedating antihistamine like Allergex is not going to help your son. Then he has a bad nasal infection as well. It sounds like he may have sinusitis or adenoiditis. The latter is probably more likely if he still has his adenoids. Either way your son needs to urgently be seen by another ENT specialist. It may well be best to take your son to an emergency paediatric unit where he can be properly examined and the ENT specialist on duty can see your son urgently.and this will have to be a different ENT specialist
