Q.

Flying long haul with 7-month-old.

We've recently had conflicting medical advice on the use of allergex for our baby when we fly this weekend. (GP vs paed). Beside nasal drops what is safe to use to relieve the little guy (10.2kg) ? He has an inflamed throat & runny nose and is scratching one ear. No fever yet. But very cranky and moany and not sleeping well. (Ears seem to be clear of infection although wax made it difficult to see well). Will breastfeed as normal and during take off and landing. Any other wisdom welcome to enable him to sleep well.

Sedatives usually have a bad effect with babies. Instead of calming them down and helping them to sleep, they often become very restless and active. Do not give your baby Allergex, which in any case is not recommended for such a young baby. It may make your baby very unhappy. The problem you have got is that he may have an ear infection and his ear may be very painful when he is flying especially when coming in to land.He must use a saline nasal spray just before take off and landing. Use FLO-Baby nasal spray. It would also help to give him a dose of Calpol before flying and make sure to feed him on take off and landing.
