Eating out when trying to adapt to a healthier lifestyle can be incredibly difficult as there are so many tempting dishes out there that are laden with bad fats, sugars and additives.

Luckily, we are spoilt for choice in South Africa when it comes to the types of establishments we can visit when trying to maintain these healthier lifestyles, but to make it easier for you we have compiled this list.

Here are some restaurants to visit when trying to watch your weight and health.

Restaurants are located in South Africa and are listed, by province, below:

1. In the Eastern Cape:

Kitchen Windows Beach Restaurant

Kitchen Windows Beach Restaurant serves wholesome, fresh foods that will have you salivating at their presentation. All of the meals here are freshly made to order, which might take a little bit longer to prepare and made from organic ingredients, which makes the wait worth while.

Order their organic beef or kudu burger and enjoy guilt-free munching with amazing sea views and attentive service.

Located at 80 Ferreira Street, Jeffrey’s Bay, Eastern Cape

Valley Harvest

For food that explodes with flavour, Valley Harvest is the best place for you. They make their own famous Essene health bread made out of bean sprouts, made daily, for you to enjoy. Visit this place for a great meal and order their gluten-free quiche for fantastically guilt-free dining.

Located at 129 Fordyce Road, Walmer, Port Elizabeth

2. In the Western Cape:

Bistrot Bizerca

Fine bistro dining is the specialty of this critically acclaimed establishment. The beetroot salad served at Bistrot Bizerca is accompanied by a sensational beetroot sorbet and light homemade croutons. All of the ingredients used at this bistro are sourced seasonally and locally. Their fresh tuna and melon salad is a thing of wonder that is an out-and-out delight to the palate.

Located at 98 Shortmarket Street, Heritage Square, City Centre, Cape Town

Bedouin Café & Deli

Bedouin Café & Deli, the trendy Cape Quarter Lifestyle Village’s newest tenant, specializes in homemade artisanal labneh cheese, which is much lower in calories than traditional cream cheese as it is strained from yoghurt. They feature their labneh in a number of their dishes and salads, such as their crunchy Lebanese chickpea salad with lemon and olive oil dressing. A visit to this place will leave you feeling full, light and with a smile on your face.

The name says it all, doesn’t it?

Gingko Good Food is a relaxed space where you can find delicious and fresh good foods. Whole ingredients that are organic and locally sourced make up the dishes on the menu. They serve scrumptious pizzas where you can choose between whole-wheat or gluten-free bases. They also have a wonderful selection of super food smoothies to give you that extra pep in your step.

Leafy Greens Café

Leafy Greens is located on an organic farm where they grow their own produce for the dishes served at this gourmet café. Indulge in their famous guilt-free strawberry cheesecake which is made with zero sugar, dairy, wheat and that is completely gluten-free. Leafy Greens takes the healthy pizza to a while new level, with their buckwheat and flax bases topped with raw foods and nut cheese.

Located at Rocky Ridge road, off Beyers Naude Drive, Mulderdrift, Gauteng

4. In Kwa-Zulu Natal:

Corner Café

The Corner Café is the perfect meeting place, be it for business or for a good time. The atmosphere is friendly and easy-going with wonderful staff and hosts. Go for the half and half option, where you can select half a pizza to go with half a salad. Perhaps you’re a Tim Noakes fan, their slow roasted pork belly and stuffed gem squash is an utter treat.

Located at 197 Brand Road, Glenwood, Durban

Conscious Café

With limited options and no meat in sight, the Conscious Café prepares the few dishes that are on the menu with precision and patience, and it is fantastic. All of the foods on the menu are organic and their yummy smoothies are all dairy-free. If you’re looking for a place to relax, listen to chilled music, read a book and enjoy a deliciously light meal, this is the place for you.

Located at Castle, 24 Old Main Road, Hillcrest, Durban

Now, dining at a restaurant when you're watching what you eat doesn't have to end up being a cheat meal.
