What is sinusitis?

If you have thick nasal discharge, facial pressure and nasal congestion, you may have rhinosinusitis, frequently simply referred to as sinusitis.

Causes of sinusitis

The sinuses produce mucus that helps to clean the nose and allows you to smell. A sinus infection, which interferes with airflow into and drainage of mucus out of the sinuses, can cause sinusitis.

Treating sinusitis

The secret to treating sinusitis is learning to control the source of sinus infection, re-establishing proper nasal drainage, and relieving pain.

Symptoms of sinusitis

The symptoms of sinusitis can vary from person to person but usually include nasal congestion, headache, sinus pain and thick mucus.

Diagnosing sinusitis

Sinus infection is diagnosed based on the history of the patient and a thorough examination by the doctor. The diagnosis is typically made by a combination of symptoms and the results of the examination.

Preventing sinusitis

The more sinus infections you get, the greater the chance you’ll need an operation. Preventing sinusitis is best.
