  • Falling off the fitness bandwagon after getting sick can mean falling back into old habits.
  • Trying to manage your symptoms, getting enough rest, and eating well can be tough leaving little time or energy for anything else.
  • Taking small steps can ensure that you don't fall into the unhealthy rabbit hole.

Many of us are no strangers to illnesses that can knock us right off our wellness goals and back into a slump. Getting back on the wagon after falling off for a long time can be challenging, but it is possible with a little bit of elbow grease and a lot of determination.

Johannesburg fitness enthusiast Jordyn Mann shares how she manages to stay on the fitness tip despite being unwell.

Keeping it moving

According to Mann, she makes sure that she listens to her body and rests when needed. However, she tries to take short walks around her home to keep her body moving. She also suggests doing light yoga or stretches at least once or twice between resting periods.

"Movement, even while we're sick, is important for circulation. Nothing too strenuous, though. Listening to your body and giving yourself a bit of grace is the key," she says.

Eat good, feel better

While many of us have little to no appetite when we aren't feeling good, Jordyn shares that eating foods full of nutrients is important to help our bodies fight the illness. She also stresses how eating fatty and unhealthy foods can throw us off our goals and lead to a downward spiral.

Mann says:

When you're not feeling great, you might want to rot in bed with a bunch of takeaways and some of your favourite unhealthy snacks. Resist the urge to do this and rather reach out to a friend or family member who will be kind enough to cook you a good pot of veggie-packed chicken soup. If takeaways are your only option, order mindfully and try not to overindulge.

Drink up all your water

Jordyn shares that remembering your water goals while you're under the weather is essential. Feeling dehydrated can drag the illness on longer and carry you further from your health goals.

"Drink water, soup or even broth throughout the day. Keeping yourself hydrated will help keep your energy levels up and on your way to better health in no time."

Lastly, Jordyn shares how important it is to give yourself and your body time without feeling too guilty about neglecting the gym.
