Side-effects following Covid-19 vaccination have been in the spotlight following the vaccine roll-out in South Africa.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that it is not uncommon to feel tiredness, experience a headache and muscle pain, chills, high temperature and nausea following vaccination.

This means that your body is in the process of building protection against the virus.

Your arm may also display some swelling and redness, and you might experience some localised pain where you received the injection.

The major focal point of Covid-19 vaccine side-effects have been those of blood clots and inflamed heart muscles.

Even though scientists have proven these occurrences to be incredibly rare, and that they continue to monitor reported adverse reactions, healthcare professionals have said it is not unusual to feel anxious about receiving the vaccine, but to be reassured that most side-effects are treatable.

The penultimate installment of the Health24 vaccine information series features Professor Linda-Gail Bekker, a physician-scientist and infectious disease specialist at the University of Cape Town, and co-lead investigator in South Africa's Sisonke Johnson & Johnson vaccine study.

Bekker discusses common reactions after receiving a vaccine, but also tackles misconceptions and misinformation around severe side-effects.
