Gold Fields has been ordered to halt activities at a rocky outcrop of its flagship Salares Norte project in Chile over fears it may disrupt chinchilla populations.
The JSE-listed mining company on Monday confirmed its flagship Salares Norte project in the Chilean Andes has received an order from the country's Superintendent of the Environment for the immediate suspension of "dismantling" Rocky Area No 3.
The Chilean authority, on its website, said there is no certainty of the absence of specimens of the chinchilla species in the area. As such, continued activity would not comply with an approved rescue and relocation plan for chinchillas.
