While several municipalities have approached Eskom to take over electricity supply areas, the power utility has called for a more "standardised approach" amid its unbundling into three entities, it said in a statement.
Earlier this week the City of Cape Town said that Eskom decided to end discussions with the metro, which was planning on taking over electricity supply areas. In a letter from Eskom, general manager Mbulelo Yedwa, addressed to Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, Eskom said that it was not in its "best interest" to transfer the assets.
In response to questions from News24, Eskom ultimately released a statement explaining its position.
