Weight-loss supplements

There are many weight-loss supplements on the market that promise to solve your weight problems. While some weight-loss products have been found to produce modest results, the majority of them have failed to produce significant weight loss (more than 2kg). This is especially true over longer periods of time, research has found.

Weight-loss supplements are most effective when used in conjunction with a kilojoule-controlled eating plan and regular exercise. Remember, your body will only start losing weight, if you start to eat fewer kilojoules than your body uses; and exercise helps to speed up your metabolism which helps you to burn kilojoules faster.
If you are considering using weight-loss supplements, chat to your doctor about possible side-effects. This is especially important if you have existing health problems and/or are taking medication.

Research studies suggest that ingredients in green tea and green coffee extracts promote thermogenesis, which can help you burn more kilojoules when used in conjunction with a weight-loss plan and exercise.

Traditionally green tea has been used for centuries to help improve energy levels.  In more modern times, research has shown that green tea helps improve metabolism and assists weight loss.

Green coffee extract contains high concentrations of chlorogenic acids that are known to have health benefits and also to influence glucose and fat metabolism.
Hydroxycitric acid (HCA), extracted from Garcinia cambogia, has traditionally been used to assist with decreasing the formation of fat, and helping reduce one’s appetite.

Certain supplements marketed for satiety enhance feelings of fullness after eating. These can act as a boost to a person’s will-power, and help them to avoid relapsing into old bad habits in an attempt to stave off hunger pangs in between meals.
One such supplement is caralluma fimbriata, traditionally used for centuries by Indian tribes to help reduce hunger.

Numerous weight-loss products also contain sources of soluble fibre, which theoretically could absorb water within the gut, causing increased satiety and a lower kilojoule intake. Examples include guar gum, glucomannan, and psyllium.
CLA (conjugated linoleic acid) is a fatty acid naturally found in foods. This has been proven to help decrease body fat and increase lean muscle mass.
Chromium might be useful in stabilising blood sugar levels.  It is also thought to play a role in carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, thereby possibly influencing weight and body composition.

Probiotics are vital to maximise the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients. Probiotics are live bacteria that naturally occur in one’s gastro-intestinal tract. Owing to poor nutrition, excess fast foods and other factors, the natural balance between "good" bacteria and “bad” bacteria in the gastro-intestinal tract can be disturbed.  Probiotics are vital to maximise the digestion and absorption of food and nutrients.

In terms of your health in general, a good multivitamin and mineral supplement is beneficial.
