All in for organic?

accreditation

Research increasingly proves that good food choices for kids now does a lot in growing healthy adults. So, are organic goods one of these good food choices?

What does “organic” mean?
Organic foods – both plant and animal – are produced without using chemical pesticides and fertilisers, antibiotics, synthetic growth hormones, genetically modified organisms, and man-made ingredients, like artificial colours, flavours, and preservatives.

Crops are grown using ecologically balanced agricultural practices such as crop rotation, animal and plant manures, hand weeding, and biological pest control. These principles sustain the health of soils, ecosystems, and people.

Organic meats and animal products come from livestock that eat organically grown feed. They are raised in natural and free conditions, which is said to be far better for their wellbeing, and healthier for the environment.

Overall, organic aims for environmentally, socially, and economically sustainable production.

Is organic better for children?
Going organic is a sound decision. Conventional foods often contain residues of pesticides known to cause cancer, damage the nervous system and cognitive development, and disrupt hormone functions. They also contain synthetic ingredients that are potentially harmful for humans.

Infants and young children are particularly vulnerable to these toxins because:

  • Their neurological systems are still developing.
  • Their immune systems are not fully developed, limiting its ability to protect itself.
  • Their detoxification systems have not fully matured, which means they are less able to metabolise and excrete chemicals.

Choosing organic foods is one way to protect your child from these health hazardous chemicals and reduce the risk for many illnesses. As organic foods contain fewer pesticides, they are also possibly more nutritious. Organic produce can boast up to 40% higher levels of some nutrients than conventional foods. By feeding your child a diet rich in fresh organic produce, you are ensuring that he grows up healthy and happy.

Stock up
Organic foods can be found at most supermarkets. They usually have a label or sticker to indicate that the content is organic. You can also get organic products straight from the farmers at local markets in your city or town. The only downfall is the price. Organic food is generally more expensive than conventional counterparts, but with its vast health and environmental benefits, the extra cost could be worth it.
