8 steps to a healthy baby

Birth defects can’t always be prevented – but pregnant moms do have a certain degree of control. Even if you’re still just in the planning phase, these steps could make a difference.

Take action:

Get any medical condition under control before getting pregnant; take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily before and during pregnancy; get plenty of rest; exercise moderately; follow a well-balanced diet; avoid any contact with chemicals in your home or workplace; avoid alcohol, tobacco, and street drugs; and talk to your doctor before taking any over-the-counter drugs.
