In a UK first, doctors have used keyhole surgery to repair the spine of a baby with spina bifida while it was still inside the womb. Spina bifida is a neural tube defect disorder involving incomplete development of the brain, spinal cord and/or their protective coverings) caused by the failure of the foetus' spine to close properly during the first month of pregnancy. Normally, surgery takes place after the baby is born.
