Octomom doc loses medical licence

A doctor who helped an unemployed mother of six, conceive octuplets, has been stripped of his medical licence by the California Medical Board for not using sound judgment.

Nadya Suleman gave birth to the octuplets in January 2009. Amid a media frenzy about the amazing medical feat she was quickly dubbed the Octomom.

But public celebrations soon turned to fury when it transpired that she was still living with her parents and receiving public assistance to help care for her six other children who were also conceived via in-vitro fertilisation.

The furore quickly turned on Dr Michael Kamrava, a Beverly Hills fertility doctor, who had implanted Suleman with 12 embryos.

In a 44-page decision, a six-person panel of the medical board said that in Kamrava's treatment of Suleman and two other women, he "did not exercise sound judgement," the report said.

Previously the American Society of Reproductive Medicine had expelled him and announced stricter guidelines on embryo transfers.
