Between 10 and 30% of all new mothers suffer from post-natal depression. Are you one of them? Antidepressant medication can help to control the symptoms and psychotherapy can be helpful. So, professional help is the way to go. But what else can you do when you're feeling blue?

Take action:


Don't be fobbed off by others telling you to "pull yourself together" or that you "should be grateful"; speak to someone – your clinic sister or doctor; speak to your partner or close friend; accept that this is not your fault; ask for help from others; don't allow yourself to get exhausted; plan for enough rest and time off; prioritise and lower your standards – you can't do as much as you used to around the home; join a support group where you can share this experience with others who understand how you feel.
