In a young child, upper respiratory tract infections are often the precursor to middle ear infections. Be on the lookout for ear discharge, persistent fevers, crying when lying down and touching the ears. Always feed a baby in a semi-upright position as feeding supine (lying on their back) can also lead to middle ear infections.
