Starting at the beginning

With two of the big races of the year behind us, have you been inspired by the Argus or the Two Oceans? If you start training now you could very easily take part in one of next year’s races.

Often people who are not regular exercisers think that those who take part in endurance events such as the Cape Argus Cycle Race or the Two Oceans Marathon have something that they don’t. Which is only partly true – the only thing they have is a bit more determination and a training programme. And both those things are readily available to everyone who wants it badly enough.

Perhaps a marathon or a 100km cycle race is a bit ambitious if you’re just starting out, but they’re not impossible goals - they just might take you a bit longer to achieve. Why not start out with a more realistic short-term goal and find a cycling training programme to suit your current level of fitness? Or choose one of these basic walking programmes to get you walking 5km before you progress onto running 5km in 12 weeks.

Once you’ve accomplished those goals check out the rest of our training programmes for longer distances. Before you know it you will be on your way to your first half marathon or cycle race, and when the next big race comes you can be a part of it, inspiring others to do the same and reaping all the health benefits that go with your new-found healthy lifestyle.
