How many words do you know? It’s really quite difficult to estimate the size of the vocabulary of adults with any accuracy, but recently a team of European researchers has been using a simple test shared on social media platforms like Twitter and Facebook to unlock this mystery. Their results indicate that the average twenty-year-old native English speaking American knows some 42,000 different words.
