A 24-year-old woman has died after being injected with a gel to enlarge her buttocks.

Luz Elena Caicedo Osorio from Cali, Columbia, had apparently been told about the cosmetic procedure by a friend who knew someone who offered the treatment.

The procedure was carried out by an unnamed man at her home.

Luz Elena, who has a four-year-old son, is said to have paid 800 000 COP (around R3 900) for the procedure.

But shortly after being injected, the mom complained of headaches and severe pain in her buttocks and legs.

She then contacted the man who conducted the procedure and he advised her to take painkillers and to rest.

But Luz Elena’s condition deteriorated and she went to the Carlos Holmes Trujillo Hospital where she was admitted and first aid was provided.

Preliminary tests were performed on her and she was later transferred to the Hospital Universitario del Vall, where she died shortly after.

“Luz Elena decided to undergo a cosmetic procedure of the buttocks at home performed by an untrained person that used an unknown substance,” said Alexander Duran the Secretary for Health in Cali.

Doctors have identified the gel which killed Luz Elena and confirmed that it’s not the standard substance usually employed in this procedure.

“We’re currently waiting for the autopsy results to determine responsibilities before taking the case to the Public Prosecutor’s office,” Duran added.

Luz Elena’s friends and family were reportedly not forthcoming as to the identity of the individual who carried out the fatal injections.

So far this year seven women have died in Cali after bungled cosmetic procedures.

An investigation is ongoing and according to reports the suspect has not yet been identified or apprehended.
