SEE: 8 trauma facts you should know

South Africans are no strangers to trauma and have for example one of the highest motor vehicle accident rates in the world. On World Trauma Day we take a closer look.

An emergency medical condition means the sudden and, at the time, unexpected onset of a health condition that requires immediate medical treatment and/or an operation, whatever the cause.

If treatment is not available, the trauma could result in weakened bodily functions, serious and lasting damage to organs, limbs or other body parts, or even death.

Emergencies and traumatic events happen when we least expect them, so it’s essential to be prepared. The best way to be prepared for a medical emergency is to have all South Africa’s emergency service numbers in one place.

South Africa is a very violent country and its citizens experience high levels of trauma. Examples are high numbers of road accidents, and high levels of crime and domestic violence.
