Q.

Root canal vs extraction

My one tooth needs to have root canal done. In Dec 2005 when i was pregnant the dentist put a temp filling in. THe filling fell out around about July last year. Then in Nov 2006 i went back to him, and i asked him cant he put a permanent filling in he said no. I have to have root canal done. I think the only word he knows is root canal. I told them he should just pull the tooth out. He said if i do that then it will cause gaps between my teeth?? I still have the temp filling in now.

WHat should i do?

if the old TEMPORARY filling fell out in July and you only went back to him in November it is most likely that you will need a root canal IF you want to save the tooth. if not, have the tooth removed.

if it were my tooth, I would definitely opt for the root canal.

I had a problem where one doctor told me to have a root canal and the othe insisted on putting in a filling. Eventually I had a root canal done cos the root became infected and it drove me crazy. I have had no problems with the tooth since except sensitivity. Ask the dentist to show you the xrays and explain to you why you need this. If it is a tooth that you need to chew with or it supports other teeth then please don't extract it
