Q.

why won't kids talk?

My friend's child is almost eight and doesn't really communicate with her parents. When her mom asks her how school was or what she did, she only gives one word answers like 'okay' or 'nothing.' What are some good ways of communicating with kids and why do kids seem to "shut down" when it comes to communication?

Children communicte best within an atmosphere of complete trust when the other person is truly interested in what they have to say. Therefore it is important to invest in a good. loving and open relationship with your child from the very beginning. It is something that takes a lot of investment, but it the most important investment a parent can make.
