Q.

Weight gain

Hi Doc,

I hope that you can help.

My little boy was born wighing 3.89kgs and 50cm. He gained weight quite well until lately. His last paed visit was at 5 months. He was then 6.9kg's. The doc said that he was picking up weight a bit slowly and that he wants to see him in two months and he should at least have picked up 1 kg.

I went to the clinic last week (1 month later) and he has only picked up 200g!

Is this something to worry about? He is now 6 months and he weighs 7.1kg.

Do I take him back to the paed sooner?

Thanks in advance

What is unusual about your son's progress is that he started off on the average [50th percentile] for weight and length, but has fallen to the 10th percentile [the lowest 10% for children of his age] for his weight at 6 months. It is worthwhile asking your doctor to see him to make sure all is well-which it probably is, but I would just like to be sure.
