Travelling to Malaria areas - minimum weight

My hubby and I travelled frequently before we became parents. We now have the most beautiful 8month-old son. I am concerned about travelling with him to malaria areas, even if it is low-risk, as I do not know what is recommended in this regard.

Must he be a minimum weight to travel to these areas? Must he be on malaria medication (I know they are not very good for your health, but better than getting malaria)?

What is the norm? What is best for your child? Should we wait to travel to these areas until he is a certain age?

Much appreciated!

The World Health Organization [WHO] has advised that no child under 8 years of age should be taken into a malaria area unless absolutely necessary.Having said this I should mention that there are safe anti-malarials available for young children, but I would prefer to not use them in children under 12 months of age. There is an anti-malarial called Malarone that is used in young children. Your pharmacist will have the details and doses for your child but wait until your son is a bit older.
