To treat or not to treat

Hi Doc

My 18m old boy was off colour last week - but nothing I could really put my finger on. He was warm - I did not take a temp, bu it was low grade if anything. He still ate and drank as normal and apart from sleeping more in the day, his sleep was unaffected. This morning, however, he woke up with a high temp and was def. miserable and off his food. His temp was 39.7. He still has no other symptoms. I gave him Panado and his fever stayed down for 4 hours and then climbed again. When I took it at 4pm it was 40.1. He has no other symptoms. He has had Roseola already at 9m. He does not have any snotty nose/funny urine/runny tummy. Just a fever, fatigue/ miserable.

I have read that a raised temperature actually helps the immune system to fight the illness and giving fever reducing meds is counter productive. What is your opinion?

You definitely need to take notice of your son's very high fever. He has already had Roseola, so it is definitely not due to that illness. He has probably got an infection that is either affecting his ears or urinary tract. It is important as well to exclude meningitis. So please take him to be seen by a paediatrician or even hospital emergency dept.
