Tantrums &  worms

Dear Dr,

I have 2 questions.

1) My baby of 8 months throws terrible tantrums ending in her screaming the roof off until she cannot breathe. This is just a tantrum as I have made sure that she' s not uncomfortable, hungry, sick etc. She will even grab my face and try to bite me if she does not get what she wants. Gosh, I thought this only starts at 3years! How do I handle a tantrum situation in such a young baby?

2) Secondly, I would like to deworm her and the rest of us, as we visited family who later called to say their dog has worms. The pharmacist said that I cannot give her Vermox as she is still too young and that I have to wait until she' s 1 year old? Is there anything I can give her in the meantime just incase?

Thanks so much for your time and advice. It' s much appreciated!

Your pharmacist is correct. You cannot deworm her now. It is unlikely that she will pick up a worm infection at her age.Your bby is indeed very young to be having such tantrums. These are very uncommon under 1 year of age.She is combining the tantrums with breath holding episodes. It is extremely difficult to deal with tantrums in a young baby. They are generally brought on by frustration.Interestingly it seems that this problem is reduced if you carry your baby around as much as possible. It seems that contact with the mother helps to reduce this tendency to tantrums. You cannot reason with a baby of this age. Try and assist her if she becomes frustrated when trying to do something saying'Mommy will help you'. If she tries to bite you just say 'Stop' firmly and clearly. If she persists just leave the room after making sure that she cannot injure herself.Only return when she has stopped crying.
