This is a common illness of chilhood called mumps. The children always recover although it can be an unpleasant and painful illness in some cases. Children who get the MMR vaccine are protected against getting mumps.

Its spelt and pronounced "mumps".

Its when a gland (called the parotid gland) swells up. It can lead to infertility in boys.

Was her child not vaccinated? Its in the MMR vaccine (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) given at 15 months.
