Hi Doc. My 3½  year old nephew recently started stuttering. He never stuttered or had any speech problem before this, he was actually quite a vocal boy. Last Friday he just started with this and its as if the words do not want to come out even though he wants to say something. This is really scary for the little one and now when he wants to talk to anyone he goes and whispers in their ears. And also asks his mom why he cant talk. What can be the cause of this? Should we take him to a speech therapist. Please, your advice would be most appreciated. Thanks

Many children of 2 to 3 years go through a short period when they stutter. This does not take long to disappear. Your nephew is a little bit on the 'old' side to have started stuttering now. The safest approach would be to take him to see a speech therapist.
