Q.

Stuffy nose

Hi there,

My baby girl is 2 and a half months old and has had a stuffy nose since birth. It's often so bad that she struggles to feed (I breasfeed her) and swallows a lot of wind which sometimes makes her bring up an entire meal.

At her 6 week check up the paediatrician prescribed Betnesol, which didn't really help. I phoned him and he said that it could take up to 6 months of age for it to clear up. He said that I should use paediatric Iliandin if necessary, but I also know that you can't use Iliadin for prolonged periods, cause it will then actually only clogg the nose up more. I also dicussed the fact that she sometimes brings up a meal with him and he agreed that it was because of all the wind she is swallowing.

We've tried numerous remedies - from saline solution (which just makes her swallow the slime and makes her more prone to vomiting, but sometimes it's the only way i can get her nose open so she can feed), castor oil on and under her nose (a friend read the hint in Living and Loving), even Natura's tissue salt no. 5, which is a mucus decongestant. Nothing seems to bring enough relief for her to at least just feed normally.

We now put the humidifier on on the room during the night, with a bit of eacalyptus oil and it seems to help a bit, but I can't keep her in her room 24/7.

Is there anything you can suggest we try?

Your baby's nose is extremely blocked and nothing is helping her. She should certainly not be using a powerful cortisone to try and open her nose such as the Betnesol. Also castor oil is extremely dangerous as she may inhale this oil into her lungs. She probably has enlarged adenoids causing this problem so please have her seen by an ENT specialist ASAP.

You can get Iliadin Saline, also you can get Epizone A cream with menthol in, I used this with my daughter after her bath and it helped, you can also get baby aromahterapy bath oil that has Eucalyptus in it, that also helps.
