Strep B

I have recently heard about Strep B fot the first time in my life after our two day old baby was submitted to ICU after cardiac arrest. He was born with no illness. He is our third child and my wife wasn' t tested for Strep B during her pregnancy. I would like to know why Strep B testing is not compulsary in S.A, and how can one make other parents to be aware of this terrible thing?

I am sure that you have already read everything about Strep B infection in the newborn on the internet. In case you need further information just enter 'Strep B infection' on Google. Unfortunately unless there are circumstances during late pregnancy or labour which would alert the gynae to the possibility of Strep B infection in the mother, the diagnosis is usually only made once the baby is born and problems occur. Your wife is at risk of having further Strep B infected babies in any subsequent pregnancy/ies.
