Stomach / head sweating

Dear Dr,

I’ m not sure if I have reason for concern, and would like your input on this.
My LO is 9months old. She suffered with reflux from birth, which is under control now. She is otherwise healthy and gaining weight perfectly.

My concern is this. We’ ve been battling with her tummy eversince. If she’ s not constipated she passes A LOT of gas. She’ s not lactose intolerant or allergic to milk. She can also not drink Nan 2, as it gives her such severe stomach cramps, and is therefore still on Nan 1 on the advice of our paed, whom also referred us to a paed gastroenterologist recently. She took x-rays of the abdomen, but could really not find anything wrong. She wakes up constantly at night pulling her legs up, putting it down, passing gas. She sleeps well from 7pm until about 11pm, and then her stomach starts cramping. Or it looks like it to me. She’ s still so sleepy, mostly she cries, but does not even open her eyes, and when picked up, or passing gas, sometimes just a good old tummy / back rub, she falls asleep again almost immediately. She is currently teething. She also passes a stool anything from 4 to 7 times a day, which concerns me most. Mostly it looks normal, but sometimes it’ s loose. Sometimes she passes 2 big stools in a matter of 20 minutes, sometimes only a little then a lot. Recently I noticed some mucous in some of the stools. I saw the paed again, who wrote it all off as teething? She’ s been passing this much stools for about the last 3 months, but the first 2 months’  the stools were very hard, although she didn’ t seem constipated. We have used infantiflora and reuteri in the past, but it didn’ t help improve her tummy at all.

Secondly, she does not have fever, but her head always feels warm to the touch, and when she lies down, only her head sweats quite a lot. No matter how cool the rest of her body is, she’ ll be lying in a pool of sweat. Is this normal?

With the paed consultation last week everything else from ears to throat was normal.

I’ m so sorry for such a long post, but I really don’ t know where to from here. Is the constant gas, many stools, warm head and head sweating normal at all?

Thanks so much. Your advice is much appreciated.

Your baby's sweating is probably normal. Her other problem is not normal. She must have lactose intolerance or a milk allergy. Her illness sounds like a condition called eosinophilic gastroenteropathy which is a form of milk allergy [look it up on Google]. Try her on a special formula called Neocate just to see if she improves rapidly. This formula is very expensive but some medical aids will pay for it.Let me know what happens when you change your baby to the Neocate. You must not give her any solid food which contains milk eg Cerelac or yoghurt.
