Speech assessment

Good day,doc and thank you for taking the time to answer my question. My son will be turning 3 next month, he has been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney disease, Hypertension and Recurrent UTI at the age of 4mths and has been on chronic meds ever since. He has also been diagnosed with vitamin D defiency a year back. His current weight is 14kg and does battle with regards to weight gain and is 93cm tall. He sees a paediatric nephrologist monthly to monitor his kidney function. My actual dilemma is the fact that he is still not talking, he can only say ''yes'' and ocassionally ''mama'' ''dada''. I have been undecided on whether i should get him assessed by a speech therapist. All that his nephrologist says to me is that ''boys are generally slower'' and my other reason for not wanting to take him is that i do not want to further traumatise him because he does endure several hospital admissions . He is able to follow and understand simple instructions, can point to his different body parts, looks at books, enjoys looking at flashcards. Sorry for the long question but i thought his medical history might be vital. Thanking you for your reply.

You are welcome. Your son should definitely see a speech therapist soon. He is at the correct age to be seen and tested.
