Is soya products equivalent to dairy?. my son is allergic to milk. if I give him soya yoghurt is he getting enough dairy like he would get from the normal yoghurt?
I would also like to know if breast milk falls under dairy products.
I'm just worried that maybe my son is not get enough dairy intake.
he is 15 months and still breastfeeding, I also don't eat dairy products for his sake.

Breast milk is not regarded as dairy-by dairy we mean cow's milk products. Soya gives your child all of the protein and carbohydrate which he needs to grow but it is deficient in calcium-so he must have extra calcium. Ask your pharmacist.

Have you thought of using Goats milk as a substitute. My boys, both intolerant to dairy are well on goats milk - suppose to be closest to mothers milk.

As a dietician I get this question alot. If your child is allergic to milk, there is nothing you can do. Well done on breastfeeding for so long. You deserve a reward. Soya milk is fine for a 15month old, however I will encourage you to supplement calcium with other foods like Calsium fortified cereals, fortified juices, Canned fish (sardines, salmon with bones), some other dried beans, and some leafy greens (collard and turnip greens, kale, bok choy). If you are still worried, get a nice kiddies Calcium supplement.
