Son''s worrying constant cough

My son was born in May 2008 and has had a problem with what the doctor calls an Acute Upper Respiratory Infection.
He was admitted when he was a year old for bronchiolitis  however there was a period between April 2009 &  July 2010 where he didn’ t even have a sniffle.
However, in August &  October 2010 we went back to his paed again cos he’ s been coughing and nothing we got from our GP helped and again this year in February where he also went for an x-ray and was also tested for TB which came out negative.
His Paed said he was gonna treat his illness as Ashtma and was even given the spray. However, for the passed 2 weeks he started coughing again and this time it’ s phlegmy  he doesn’ t cough more at night nor when he’ s running  his coughs are random and I find that he coughs a lot when he wakes up in the morning not when he’ s sleeping. He doesn’ t run out of breath either when he’ s playing/running.
I took him to the GP this past weekend and right now I’ m waiting to see if the meds he got are gonna help him. By the way, everytime I take him to the Paed he recovers fully within 3days. What do you think could be the problem, doctor.? Is it possible for children under the age of 3 to be diagnosed with Ashtma? How do I know for sure if it’ s asthma? Thank you.

Your son's cough does not sound like asthma. He appears to have a wet phlegmy cough. Children with asthma have a dry cough which usually worries the child in the middle of the night. Also the cough is worse with exercise which is not the case with your son's cough. In addition he has not improved on asthma treatment. It is time for your son to be seen by a paediatric pulmonologist so that a proper diagnosis can be made of his illness.
