Solids for 4.5 month old son

Dear Prof

My youngest son is now about 4.5 months, and he weighed 7.2 kg (67 cm tall) at 4 months. He has started to nurse 3 times a night the past few nights, and is already on his knees and elbows getting ready to crawl. I was hoping to wait a bit longer to start him on solids, but it seems as though he is increasingly hungry as judged by the amount he drinks at night? He drinks at about 6 in the morning, and then 150 ml expressed breastmilk at 10 and again at 14h00 at creche. He then drinks at about 17h30 and again at 20h00 and 23h00 and usually about 02h30 again (lately at 00h30, 01h30, 03h00 approx). I am getting slightly exhausted, especially as my Chiari son also wakes at least 3 times a night (dad takes care of him thankfully). I would guess his daily intake at about 900 to 1000 ml per day. Is it a growth spurt, or is it time for solids? he is showing interest in our food and becomes excited when we eat, but I would like to wait a bit if possible.

Thank you very much for your valued opinion!

You are welcome. You have given a very clear description of your baby son's feeding routine. He certainly does seem to be ready to start solids now. Many babies start on solids at 4 months so there is no problem with this. Start him on a rice cereal.
