Q.

Soiling pants

Dr I feel VERY frustrated with my boy, 4yr8 months....He is STILL soiling his pants (not his whole bowl , but little bits at a time)...I've been potty training him from he was 3 yr old, so it's almost 2 yr now! Spoke to pead, said that we need to treat possible underlying constipation, what we did. He checked for anal restriction...no problem. The only thing we didn't look for is possible sensory problems, that can cause him 'not to feel' the stools? We have tried positive rewards, reinforcements...We have been nice, we have been angry...We have tried all the tricks in the book. I took him to therapy, without success....PLEASE, can you give me any advice? Do I need to take him to a sensory trained occupational therapist (but sometimes he does feel the need and go to the loo on his own!) Do I take him to another psychologist (they say this behavior could be suppresed aggression) or do I take him to a medical specialist(and if so, who?) He is a very smart boy, who understands what is expected of him....

Thanx

Paediatrician

Your son's problem is most likely to be due to constipation. The best person to see would be a paediatric gastroenterologist. There are experts in all the main centeres in SA.
