Smelly breath

Hi Doc.

My 23 months daughter has a smelly breath. Is it possible that it''s caused by her sucking on her thumb? What can I do?

Young children do not usually have bad breath and when they do there is usually a good reason for this.Your daughter's bad breath is not due to her sucking her thumb, but may be due to persistent mouth breathing if she has a blocked nose. Other common causes are tooth decay, throat infections such as tonsillitis and sinus infection. It would be best to ask your doctor to see her and try to find out what is the reason for her having bad breath.
