Slow weight gain in newborn

My friend's baby was born on 5 March, weighing 1.700kg and has since only picked up 650g. The baby is breast feeding and the clinic sister is worried about the slow weight gain of some weeks only 50g and others none at all. Vitamine drops with two feeds in the morning has been given the past week to stimulate hunger, but is waking the baby after an hours sleep. Is there a real worry ? What is the negative of slow weight gains ?
